VIELA Venetian Plaster
Cleaning & Maintenance
NECESSARY ITEMS
• Vegetable scrub brush with clean, white bristles.
• Spray bottle for water or recommended cleaning product.
• Clean white terry cotton towel.
• VIELA Wax
STEP ONE
• Dampen the surface with a small amount of clean, clear water and rub the wall lightly with a clean absorbent white towel. If the spot remains, scrub the wall lightly with a nylon brush. Towel dry with a clean, absorbent white towel. If the spot does not come clean, allow the surface to thoroughly dry before beginning the next step.
STEP TWO
• Try spraying lightly with soapy water and scrubbing lightly with a stiff, clean, nylon brush. Dry with a clean, absorbent towel. Again, if the spot does not come clean, allow the wall to thoroughly dry before beginning the next step.
STEP THREE
• Spray with a recommended cleaner (as mentioned in the third paragraph under "Important") and scrub with a stiff, clean, nylon brush. Dry with a clean, absorbent towel. Allow the wall to thoroughly dry before initiating any repairs to the Viela wall.
STEP FOUR
• If cleaning has dulled the surface reapply a small amount of VIELA wax to the dulled area and buff with a clean, dry, white cotton terry towel.
IMPORTANT
Rinsing off any residue of soap is very important. Always rinse any soap scum or cleaning product off the VIELA surface with plenty of clean water. Spray and pat dry using clean and absorbent towels.
Care should be taken to follow the steps for cleaning as noted below. In certain cases, repairs to the wall may be necessary. Please follow the instructions that were provided with the repair materials.
When necessary, VIELA surfaces should be cleaned with the mildest cleaning agent possible starting with water, then soap and water, and if required a clear household cleanser without bleach such as Professional Lysol Basin Tub & Tile Cleaner, or a colorless industry specific cleanser such as Don’s “Don-o-mite”. Always try the mildest cleanser first.
VIELA Venetian Plaster
Repair Techniques
Introduction:
Before you can undertake a repair to a VIELA surface, make sure you have the correct matching VIELA Venetian Plaster and Permitex SA Primer. If you have questions call us at 305-576-3316
Preparation:
Repair to the underlying substrate must be made before the texture finish is repaired. Use a setting type compound or plaster to make repairs. Care must be taken to assure that substrate repairs are 1/16” below the adjoining VIELA surface level or you will find the variation is noticeable after the repair is made. Use fine sandpaper to create an angled edge as the repair joins the adjoining VIELA. Make sure the wall substrate is dry before proceeding to the next step.
Priming:
All repairs should be primed with the Permitex SA primer prior to applying VIELA. The primer should be applied thinly (600 square feet per gallon is ideal) with a thin nap 1/4” roller or a brush. This layer is a tack coat designed to prep the wall for the additional VIELA layers. Applying too much Primer will greatly reduce the permeability of the VIELA Venetian Plaster finish. Remember thin, uniform, but not a covering appearance is what you are trying to achieve with the primer coat.
VIELA Venetian Plaster:
Repairs should be done the same way the original plaster was installed. If only a small repair or touch up is needed a small artist’s spatula may be the best tool for the job. Larger repairs should be done with a Co.me 8”x3” finishing trowel (available at TM Pratt). To apply, layer several coats of VIELA on to the repaired area using the same stroke pattern as the original installation of the adjoining areas. Allow each coat to dry before proceeding with the next coat. Feather and gradually blend the VIELA into the existing plaster. When the final VIELA coat is dry in the repaired area lightly buff the new/old work joint with steel wool to create a mat finish. Use ‘000’ or ‘0000’ grade steel wool. Finish by burnishing and waxing to match adjoining areas.
