RXM SKIM COAT
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (January 2007)
For Professional Use only
SKIM/BLOCKFILLER FOR INTERIOR & EXTERIOR SURFACES
Skim Coat is high-solids, low V.O.C., low shrinkage, high build,
acrylic latex block filler. Designed for use by professionals as
a preparatory base, skim or texture coat over interior poured or
precast concrete, concrete block, cinder block and AAC. When used
as a skim, RXM Skim creates a uniform, bondable, smoother surface
for top coating with architectural and decorative finishes. Tenacious
adhesive properties and the ability to be spray applied make RXM
Skim the ideal product for smoothing and skimming existing painted
CMU surfaces.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, and free of wax, grease,
dust, mildew, water-soluble materials, scaling, loose paint and
wallpaper. Remove, grind or flatten high spots and surface irregularities.
Glossy areas should be thoroughly cleaned with heavy-duty industrial
cleaner or wax remover, rinsed with clean water, allowed to dry
and then primed with RXM PRIMER prior to installing RXM SKIM COAT
over hard glossy surfaces. Contact TM Pratt & Company for technical
support and recommendations. 800-776-3316
MOLD & MILDEW
Mold and Mildew identification, remediation, and prevention are
subjects that have been written about extensively. While our coatings
products contain mold and mildew inhibiting agents; these will only
inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the coating itself. If
mold and mildew is present in the environment where you intend to
install our coatings, we recommend that you eradicate the problem
before you proceed. There are many mold and mildew eradication companies
in your market area that can assess and address the problem. In
addition, the EPA provides substantial background material at www.epa.gov
(search on mold or mold remediation). We have included some of the
EPA documents concerning mold on our CD or you can link to these
files at www.tmpratt.com/mold.
Difficult Substrates: TM Pratt & Company offers a number of
specialty primers for use over difficult substrates such as bleeding
woods, grease, crayon markings, hard glossy surfaces, galvanized
metal or other substrates where paint adhesion or stain suppression
is a particular problem. Contact TM Pratt & Company at 800-776-3316
for recommendations on the right problem-solving primer for your
special needs.
FINISH OPTIONS
RXM SKIM COAT can be tinted to enhance hiding capabilities and facilitate
top coating.
APPLICATION
Stir product thoroughly before use. Apply using spray (see below),
roller or trowel. Typical Skim Coat application requires several
coats. Over a surface like concrete block, AAC panels or precast,
the first coat should be applied to the joints and low areas by
hawk and trowel. Allow at least 24 hours dry time between coats.
Subsequent coats are uniformly rolled, trowelled or spray applied
and smoothed with trowel or mud knife. Use 80 grit heavy-duty production
paper if finish specifications require sanding before top coat is
applied.
APPLICATION SPRAY TECHNIQUES
Equipment: A simple compressor and hopper gun will work as long
as a good high volume compressor is used. Small, nail gun type compressors
do not work well. Output volume CFM is more important than pressure.
The more volume, the faster you can spray. Spray machines like the
GRACO RTX 1500 TexSpray will greatly speed up the application process.
Tip size is between 1/4" and 3/8" depending on desired
pattern (larger tips = larger pattern).
Step One: Surface must be free of foreign/lose material, clean and
thoroughly dry. Pressure washing is usually the best way to clean
surfaces to be textured.
Step Two: Prime surface to be textured with RXM SA Primer. Depending
on porosity of substrate, install primer at 250 to 300 square feet
per gallon after thinning with equal parts of clean water (50/50%).
Note that painted CMU surfaces use about ½ this amount of
primer. Allow primer to thoroughly dry.
Step Three: Thin RXM Skim to desired consistency for spraying with
RXM SA Primer. Usually 5% to 15% primer to skim results in a good
mix. Never thin RXM Skim with water.
Step Four: Spray Texture
Step Five: If a flattened (knock down) look is desired, trowel the
textured surface using a PVC Plastic Float (this is a common EIFS
float that costs $7 - $8 max). Allow skim material to dry slightly
before troweling (lightly misting skim with clean water at this
point may facilitate troweling. Experiment with, tip sizes, gun
set ups, dry times and misting to achieve a desired look.
COVERAGE
20 - 50 square feet per gallon. Depending on surface geography,
porosity, texture, and application methods coverage can vary greatly.
TECHNICAL DATA
(See technical data sheet)
DRYING TIME
Dry time @77 F (25 C) @ 50% RH
Set to touch - 6 hours
To Recoat: the first coat is usually the thickest and requires at
least 24 hours dry time before applying the second coat. Subsequent
coats require less dry time.
To service - 48 hours
Drying time will vary depending on temperature, humidity, air movement,
and application techniques.
THINNING/CLEANUP
RXM Skim Coat may be thinned to facilitate spraying or handling
characteristics. If adjustment is necessary, thin RXM Skim using
RXM Primer until desired consistency is achieved. Never add or thin
with water.
Clean hands tools and equipment with warm soapy water. Spray equipment
should be given a final rinse with mineral spirits to prevent rusting.
Use completely or dispose of properly. Dry, empty containers may
be recycled in a can-recycling program. Local disposal requirements
vary; consult your sanitation department or state designated environmental
agency for information on disposal options.
CERTIFICATION
Formulated without lead mercury or chromates.
LIMITATIONS
Do not apply when air and surface temperatures are below 50 F (10
C). Should not be used as a waterproofing sealer or as a finish
coat. Avoid application to surfaces freshly treated with silicone
type water repellants.
