Introduction: Generic Instructions
For Professional Use Only. Permitex coatings are sold and installed
by professional painting contractors trained in the application
procedures by TM Pratt & Company.
It is assumed that all wall surfaces have been made PAINT READY
prior to the installation of Permitex . The Permitex installer should
conduct a thorough inspection of all areas to be coated before starting
work. If wall surfaces are unsatisfactory, preparation incomplete,
or areas obstructed, it is best to deal with these inadequacies
and arrange for a cure before proceeding.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, and free of wax, grease,
dust, mildew, water-soluble materials, scaling, loose paint and
wallpaper. Glossy areas should be thoroughly cleaned with heavy-duty
industrial cleaner or wax remover, rinsed with clean water, allowed
to dry and then sanded and/or scraped with a wire brush until gloss
has been dulled.
PASTE REMOVAL
Excess wallpaper paste must be removed by wetting out with warm
water and scraping. A normal amount of wallpaper paste residue can
stay, as it will wet out, emulsify, and lock down when the PERMITEX
SA Primer Coat is properly applied. If carpet tack strips are to
be saved, they should be covered before paste removal.
WALL REPAIRS
Repair or replace damaged, unsound, wet, or rotted drywall. Cut
away and/or remove any lose (de-laminated) wallboard paper. Patch
and make smooth as needed. Large voids, gaps or cuts need to be
patched and/or taped and mudded. Caulk where required to achieve
an even & clean line in corners and at window, doorframe, and
equipment junctions.
MOISTURE DAMMAGE
Previous moisture problems may cause the wallboard paper to blister
or separate from the wallboard in places. Mild blistering may not
require cutting out and repairing as the paper may shrink down and
bond when the PERMITEX SA PRIMER coat dries. If blistering persists,
these areas must be cut out, repaired and primed again before proceeding.
Allow to thoroughly dry. Do not proceed with Permitex installation
on areas that remain wet.
RUST BLOCK
Check all corner beads or exposed nail and screw heads for signs
of rust and use a high quality, stain blocking metal primer (RUST-OLEUM
No. 769) on these and other areas, which are likely to produce rust
in the future. Treat exposed rusty metal with Ospho prior to applying
metal primer and patching with plaster. Extremely rusted corner
beads should be removed and replaced with plastic corner beads.
MOLD & MILDEW
Mold and Mildew identification, remediation, and prevention are
subjects that have been written about extensively. While our coatings
products contain mold and mildew inhibiting agents; these will only
inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the coating itself. If
mold and mildew is present in the environment where you intend to
install our coatings, we recommend that you eradicate the problem
before you proceed. There are many mold and mildew eradication companies
in your market area that can assess and address the problem. In
addition, the EPA provides substantial background material at www.epa.gov
(search on mold or mold remediation). We have included some of the
EPA documents concerning mold on our CD or you can link to these
files at www.tmpratt.com/mold.
MASKING & BAGGING
Protect all areas and surfaces not to be coated using the 3M or
an equivalent masking system. Surfaces to be masked should be sound,
clean, and free of contaminates. Be sure that any surfaces such
as doorframes, etc. that may have been painted prior to the Permitex
installation, are adequately cured before masking. See appendices
for additional information.
TECHNICAL DATA (See Technical Data
Sheets for each of the coatings)
THINNING/CLEANUP
Thinning is generally unnecessary, but if required to obtain desired
application properties a small amount of clean water may be added.
Never add other paints or solvents.
Clean hands tools and equipment with warm soapy water. Spray equipment
should be given a final rinse with mineral spirits to prevent rusting.
Use completely or dispose of properly. Dry, empty containers may
be recycled in a can-recycling program. Local disposal requirements
vary; consult your sanitation department or state designated environmental
agency for information on disposal options.
CERTIFICATION Formulated without lead mercury or chromates.
LIMITATIONS
Do not apply when air and surface temperatures are below 50 F (10
C). Avoid application to surfaces treated with silicone type water
repellants.

Instructions C Permitex Texture Coat
PERMITEX TEXTURE COAT is based on modern acrylic chemistry, is low
V.O.C., contains no clay, plaster, or cement compounds and can be
tinted to any color.
PERMITEX TEXTURE COAT remains slightly flexible when cured, making
it resistant to cracking due to building movement, along with temperature
and moisture variations as the moisture content of the substrate
decreases over time.
PERMITEX TEXTURE COAT is spray applied using a simple hopper gun
and compressor outfit or more elaborate GRACO TexSpray RTX 1500
spray machine which greatly reduces installation time. Multiple
gun adjustments, air pressure settings, tip sizes, spray patterns
and knock down techniques will yield a wide variety of looks. As
a starting point for PERMITEX TEXTURE COAT/STANDARD FINISHES, assuming
the ambient temperature and humidity are 75 F & 70% RH: Marshalltown
QLT Quickshooter hopper gun set on ¼" orifice with a
medium trigger stop setting and air compressor at 20 -30 psi. Apply
a uniform pattern at a rate of 100 square feet per gallon shooting
from a distance of 4 to 6 ft. from the surface to be coated. Allow
sprayed material to set up for approximately 20 - 25 minutes before
knocking down. Use a two-step knock down procedure with the first
step being an 'X' pattern (anything but up & down). The second
and final knock down pass should be perpendicular to the last pass
with a flat steady finish stroke. Recommended knock down tools:
Red Devil brand painter's Trim Guard/Vinyl Smoother # 4048 or a
quality 10" dry wall taping knife
DRYING TIME
Dry time @77 F (25 C) @ 50% RH

Instructions D Permitex Raised Texture Finish
[Back to Top]
Raised Texture Coat for Interior Surfaces
PERMITEX Raised Texture Coat is based on modern acrylic chemistry,
is low V.O.C., contains no clay, plaster, or cement compounds and
can be tinted to any color. RXM Raised Texture Coat remains slightly
flexible when cured, making it resistant to cracking as the moisture
content of the substrate decreases over time.
PERMITEX Raised texture Coat is spray applied using a simple hopper
gun and compressor outfit, more elaborate spray machines like the
GRACO TexSpray RTX 1500 will greatly speed up the application process.
As a starting point for PERMITEX Raised Texture Coat/Premium Finishes,
assuming the ambient temperature and humidity are 75 Dg. F &
70%: Marshalltown QLT Quickshooter hopper gun using the smallest
tip with an air compressor at +/- 50 psi. Apply a uniform pattern
at a rate of 65 - 80 square feet per gallon shooting from a distance
of 4 to 6 ft. from the surfaced to be coated. The ideal particle
size should be about half the size of a grain of cooked rice. Using
a larger tip and less air pressure will give you a larger particle
and heavier pattern. If spraying in an excessively humid environment
apply two lighter coats with the same combined rate of 65 - 80 square
feet per gallon. Allow the first coat to dry before proceeding with
the second coat.
DRYING TIME
Dry time @77 F (25 C) @ 50% RH

A above as the first step
APPLICATION
Stir thoroughly before and occasionally during use. Apply in one
or two coats (do not over work) using a high quality synthetic bristle
brush, medium nap roller, pad, or spray. The key to a successful
RXM EGGSHELL FINISH application is to flow the coating on (not overwork
it), leave it, and let the chemistry do the rest as it cures.
Spray Airless: Fluid pressure- 1,500-2,000 PSI; Tip- .017 orifice;
filter 50 mesh
COVERAGE over textured surfaces
Unprimed 190 - 225 Sq. ft. per gallon. Coverage rates will vary

Appendix B: Hints for Masking and Bagging the
Room: [Back
to Top]
- The room is assumed to be paint ready and furniture, fixtures,
and equipment free (FF&E). Check different areas in each of
the rooms for moisture levels. Make note of which areas are checked
and the moisture readings obtained at each location. Do not continue
if any moisture readings are in excess of the safe limit for the
substrate being tested. If you believe you may have a moisture
problem, stop and correct the problem before proceeding.
- The return air conditioning, or hot air heat system should
be turned off or blocked before masking.
- The carpet if any should be covered with polyethylene with
at least 3" overlap and duct tape applied at the seams.
- Dust off or wipe areas to be masked to assure masking tape
sticks to the substrate.
- All heating and a/c vents should be masked, vent covers should
be removed, and thermostat should be adjusted and masked.
- Sprinkler heads and smoke alarms should be masked with paper
or film at base and then use an appropriate sized Styrofoam cup
to cover the sensor. Check with building personnel to determine
whether the procedure followed meets operating codes.
- All switch plate and outlet covers should be removed and placed
in room hardware bag.
- All switches and outlets should be masked.
- All windows, wooden trim, doors, and doorframes should be masked.
- All hallways and high traffic areas should be covered with
rosin paper runners.
- A clean area should be defined near the elevator allowing personnel
to remove shoes or apply clean footwear or booties before entering
the elevator and other areas of the hotel.
- Masking the doors, windows, shower units, a/c unit, mirrors
or other common sized objects encountered in each room should
be done using pre cut pieces if possible. Glue sticks are quite
useful to tack the poly material to the area being masked, and
then follow up with tape.
- If the doorstops have been removed, a temporary one should
be rigged to prevent wall damage.
- Be sure that any surfaces such as doorframes, etc., that may
have been painted are adequately cured.
Appendix C: Clean Up [Back
to Top]
- All tools and equipment used in the application of Permitex
products can be cleaned with warm soapy water.
- After the texture coat has dried and the room has been inspected.
The room should be cleaned up as follows.
- All tape should be removed from the walls, windows, outlets,
switches, and doors. Care should be taken, as the Texture Coat
can be peeled away from the wall in areas if tape is removed hastily.
When in doubt use a razor utility knife with a fresh blade to
cut the tapeline to get a clean edge. All used painting supply
material, except containers, should be removed from the room and
placed in the facility's dumpsite. All polyethylene should be
removed from the floor unless the property owner wishes it to
stay.
Appendix D: The Inspection Process
- The room should be inspected at the inception of the job to
determine if the area is in a paint ready condition.
- Moisture readings are crucial since painting/texturing over
moist walls will result in an unacceptable job. Work must not
begin if moisture readings are in excess of safe readings based
on the wall substrate.
- Additional inspections should occur after the room is masked
and bagged.
- Further inspections are necessary after the primer is applied.
Look for raised drywall face, non-dry spots, and recheck moisture
readings.
- Additional inspection should take place after the smooth coat
is applied.
- Additional inspections should occur after the texture coat
is applied.
- A final sign off inspection should occur after the room is
cleaned.
