SPECIAL WALL SURFACES


PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes: Masking, protection of adjacent surfaces, priming, finishing, and cleanup of coated areas throughout the project as designated on the drawings and finish schedules. (Write a general description of the scope of work)

1.02 DEFINITIONS

A. Acrylic Coating: Specialty Viela acrylic coatings meeting the minimum performance specifications stated herein.

1.03 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's product information including installation instructions and product description.


B. Samples: Prior to beginning work, furnish the architect with color and finish selections. Manufacturer shall create and submit samples of the selected colors and finishes for architect's review.

1. Final acceptance of finish will be from samples applied at mock-up at the project site.

1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. General: Work shall be done by skilled applicator in accordance with the best standard practice and in a manner acceptable to the architect. Any work not conforming to these specifications shall be corrected to the satisfaction of the architect at the expense of the installing contractor.

B. Qualifications: Applicators shall be factory trained and certified specifically to apply Viela materials prior to commencing work. Applicator shall submit a photocopy of factory Certificate as proof of factory certification at the start of work.

C. Regulatory Requirements:

1. International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), Section 4204, Class 1.
2. Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI), Section 704.2, Class A.
3. Southern Florida Building Code; Section 3078.2, Class A.

D. Coordination of Work: Review other sections of these specifications in which primers, substrates, or other substances might be present to insure compatibility of total coatings systems. Upon request from other trades, furnish information or characteristics of coating materials provided for use, to insure compatible substrate materials and finishes are used.

1.05 DELIVERY AND STORAGE

A. Deliver materials to project site in original, new and unopened containers bearing manufacturer's name and label, and the following information;

1. Name of coating material and batch number.
2. Contents of containers including color name and number.

B. Storage and Protection: Store materials in tightly covered containers. Maintain containers in a clean condition. Protect from freezing and maintain temperatures below 100 degrees F. Keep materials organized by name of coating to reduce the risk of error. Do not stack materials more than three high. Protect from fire hazards.

1.06 SITE CONDITIONS:

A. Apply materials only when surface temperature is between 60 and 100 degrees F.

B. Protect finishes from abrasion for a period of 2 days after installation. Mask all areas that will not be coated and wipe away any excess of the manufacturer's materials on other surfaces.

C. Cut and remove masking tape and film with a sharp razor knife, and clean all adjacent surfaces upon completion of each work area. Do not leave masking tape or excess material in place until hard.



1.07 WARRANTY

A. Provide manufacturer's standard 5 year limited warranty.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURER

B. Other manufacturer's products complying with the qualitative and selection requirements may be considered by the architect provided such products are submitted to the architect for review (select 5 days or 10 days) prior to bidding and with sufficient time allowed for evaluation prior to bidding. Submit proposed substitute products with supporting documentation to verify conformance with the above requirements, pursuant to the Section 01630 - Product Substitutions Procedures. Attempts to short cut the specified product substitution process could result in disqualification of the proposed substitute product.

2.02 MATERIALS

B. Viela wax as supplied by TM Pratt & Company, Miami, Florida. Telephone: (800) 776-3316, Fax: (305) 576-8416, E-mail: info@tmpratt.com to be applied to areas after primer.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrate prior to commencing with the installation of the coatings.

3.02 PREPARATION

A. Perform preparation and cleaning procedures in accordance with manufacturer's installation instructions and as specified, for each particular substrate condition.

1. Review and adhere to the recommendations stated in the Manufacturers Safety Data Sheet.

B. Remove or mask all hardware, switch plates, lighting fixtures, and other items attached to the substrate and not to be coated prior to application of coatings. Mask to avoid damage to non-coated areas such as ceilings, floors, carpets, tiles, doors, windows, jams, and moldings.

C. If necessary, clean surfaces before applying any materials.

D. Surface Preparation:

NOTE TO SPECIFIER:
Edit the following subparagraphs to suit project conditions.

1. Drywall: Prepare drywall to industry acceptable standard for hanging vinyl wall covering (level 5 finish). Remove any dust. Do not prime the drywall.
2. Cementitious Substrates: Prepare cementitious surfaces such as concrete, concrete block, cement plaster, etc. by cleaning as noted above; then patch all major holes, joint lines, etc., using materials as specified in Section 07900 - Joint Sealants or Section 09210 Gypsum Plaster.
3. Ferrous Metals: Clean with non-petroleum based solvent. Prime all bare metal surfaces with a good quality rust inhibiting primer prior to application of any coatings.
4. Galvanized Surfaces: Clean with non-petroleum based solvent.
5. Existing Painted Surfaces: Clean surface with soap and water to remove oils, dust, etc. Lightly sand surface to improve adhesion. Remove any paint that is not adhering to the substrate.

3.03 APPLICATION

A. If necessary, stir materials before application with a power drill and a paint paddle for the Primer and a drywall compound paddle for the Viela materials. Keep containers closed until the material is used.

B. Thinning: Coating materials come mixed and tinted to match specifications. Thinning of the material is not recommended. See manufacturer's written installation instructions for thinning details.

C. Apply coating materials in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions to achieve the appearance of the approved samples. Coating materials shall be used as a system that may include a Primer and several coatings of Viela.

D. Coat surfaces behind removable equipment or furniture units such as refrigerators or bar units with the same coatings as exposed substrates.

E. Finishes Requiring Primer: Apply stain block primer with an airless paint sprayer or 1/4 to 3/8 inch nap paint roller at a coverage rate of 250 square feet per gallon. Allow to cure until firmly set (minimum of 1 to 2 hours).

F. Apply three to five coat(s) of Viela materials in accordance with manufacturer's instructions until finish is equivalent to samples approved by architect.

G. Apply wax with a trowel as per manufacturer's instructions. Allow to dry and buff to gloss equivalent to samples approved by architect.


3.04 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Clean Up: Remove all masking materials and discard empty containers to refuse. Clean up any overspray with water.

B. Protection: Provide signs as needed to protect coatings from damage by others.

C. After completion of work by all trades, repair damaged finish areas.

1. Applicator to provide touch up cleaning and maintenance equipment and instructions in the form of a repair kit as provided by the manufacturer.
